Myths and Lies about CAT Preparation
The bigger the fruit is, more are the bees around. The fruit here is CAT and bees are the myths and lies that constantly revolve around them. These myths are sometimes so appalling that it can make any focused aspirant to go off-track and eventually lose his way. Here, we try to pin the balloon of doubts to empower aspirants to continue dreaming about their goal. Below are the top 10 rankers in Myth Category.
1: They say CAT is the mother of all exams. Is it?
Wrong. This is just another exam. The mother of all exams is Life. You can afford to fail in CAT, but not in Life. So, take CAT preparation as a phase in Life, not as your Life.
2: They say CAT is not for faint-hearted. Is it?
If you think you are faint-hearted, better start preparing for CAT soon – it makes you stone-hearted.
3: One topper in an interview said that he has been preparing from quite a long time. Where do I stand in front of him?
Well, the answer is BIG NO. There are no lucky number of days or months of preparation that can define success. Few aspirants start preparing early than others. Some start preparing by doing graduation side by side while others start after their office hours. CAT is not about spending X hours on preparing, it is about improving skills time to time, retrospection of mistakes and evolving with practice. One might need to brush up more concepts than other but that doesn’t make him incompetent.
4: I am an Engineer... Being good at Math will help me to crack the CAT?
To be honest, it would not matter whether you are an engineer or not. If you look at the CAT questions that have come in the exam, there are usually simple ways of solving the sums. The problem is most of them complicate it too much. A simple understanding of basic stuff of Math coupled with logical approach to solving the sums is usually sufficient to crack the CAT.
5: I am fluent in English...i can go easy with the Verbal Ability section ?
For most of us, because of mother tongue influence (MTI) we think our English speaking skills are not up to the CAT standards but let me tell you this is not true. Also,do not rest on your laurels if you have been into public speaking/debating etc. since long. This is because CAT has more to it than a command over the Queen’s language. The importance of test-taking strategy and practice cannot be emphasised enough. I have seen enough number of candidates who have a good command over the language but falter in the test because they cannot manage their time.
6: I left my IT job to prepare for the CAT . Will it lead to rejection in the IIM interviews?
Every year many students quit their jobs or have dropped 1-2 years make it to IIMs and other top MBA institutes across India. This is because CAT score is the most important component for interview short listing, followed by your past academic record. Work experience is usually not considered for the purpose and wherever it is considered, it has a low weight. However, in the interview you will be asked about your reason for quitting and just sharing the real reason is good enough. You will not be rejected just because you quit your job.
7:I don’t want to waste one more year working in a job I don’t like. will I be able to make it this year? What if I couldn’t?
Can’t leave job? Wow. That’s great. you can study along with job itself. CAT preparation is neither religion nor life to seek enlightenment in a far away concrete desert. Do your duty sincerely, if pleased, almighty CAT will call you to its shrine, if pleased with your personality, it will give you a pass to Heaven – the IIM. Why go there uninvited?
8: I do not have any prior work-ex whereas my friend has. Do I really stand in the league of CAT aspirants?
This is not true again. It is not at all important yet it is helpful in many cases. Work experience enriches the learning experience. There are significant number of fresher in ever batch. As a fresher, you may highlight some of the points like your internships, academic projects undertaken or if you’ve done any extracurricular social work.
9: luck is needed for this exam.
Ya, only if you think you are unlucky. Anyway, let me modify a famous quote for you – Success is one percent luck and ninety-nine percent perspiration. Don’t let that 99% thing slip from your hand. Toil sincerely, and you will be rewarded with that 1 percent luck.
10: I started preparing for CAT with enthusiasm also joined XYZ classes, but i don’t seem to go anywhere?
Three things You can do :- The BEST thing : Be disciplined in the classes and LEARN it out...(Pain involved) 2nd Best THING : do not GO to the classes at all (even after paying the money) and accept it !!! Worst THING : - do not GO/ Go irregularly ; but keep on feeling GUILTY about "Not Going" As happens with MOST other things in Life ... Take Strong, Firm Decisions and LEAVE the Guilt ... If the right things aren’t happening to you, don’t blame the stars. You simply have to do the right things.
11: I will join crash course... “Crack CAT in 90 days”. It’s my shortcut to CAT.
Really! The genuine advice is, whenever there is less time remaining, you have to put more effort into your studies to practice enough questions for good CAT preparation. Even if you are super intelligent and confident of clearing CAT with only 3 months preparation, the trend of getting into CAT is not in favor of you. Warren Buffett once said this: “No matter how great the talent or efforts, some things just take time. You can’t produce a baby in one month by getting nine women pregnant.” I would say only one thing – CAT preparation takes time.
12: I took so many mock tests and still I am not comfortable with exam pattern!
While majority of the serious aspirants deliberately practice ‘n’ number of mock tests and most likely they succeed, still there is this most important phase- The phase of analyzing which is missed by most. One should be aware of their strengths and weaknesses in CAT preparation such that it can be addressed within the stipulated time. This can only be accomplished by analyzing the questions in mock where one is slow or weak. So, only solving mock tests will not help but analyzing them will.
13: In my last attempt, I got very less percentile (cant even say score). Help me.
You took a journey but couldn’t reach the destination. It doesn’t mean the end of your life or the end of the road – start a new phase in your Life from where you are now. What matters in the end is how well you lived your Life, not how many successes you achieved. If the King has painful piles, what is the use of diamond studded golden throne?
14: Lakhs and Lakhs of candidate appear for the exam. Do I have any chance to clear the exam!
While this may be true that there are quite a good number of candidates appearing for exam, still there is math involved behind it which tells a different story. CAT has relative marking scheme where one candidate’s performance is compared with other which is nothing but percentile marking. So, if there are 2, 00,000 students appearing then usually 50,000 are non-serious attempters, other roughly 80, 000 student are the ones who somehow gave up the preparation in middle and lost the track. Now, the remaining 70,000 has many who don’t prepare smart. They work hard but their scores do not improve. In short, your actual competition is with few thousand candidates. Those who study systematically and consistently, get into IIMs. If you do the same, you will be one among them. Don’t have fears even before you start. You must enter the race and work hard to win it. Remember this: “I never did a day’s work in all my Life. It was all fun” (Edison). Make the process fun, enjoy reading, love what you do and do everything to please your heart. Not the society. CAT is not for the people who can do without an IIM. If you think IIM’s are where you wanted to be, there is a good chance that you actually land up there.
