Q1 ARITHMETIC PROBLEMS

x and y are real numbers satisfying the conditions 2<x<3 and -8< y <-7. Which of the following expressions will have the least value?

Given that 2 < x <3 and -8< y < -7.

From here we get -24 <xy <-16

Since y is negative and xy is also negative so xy^2 will always be positive.

If we multiply xy with x and if we multiply xy with 5, then we have the following:

-72 < x^2y<-32 and -120 <5xy <-80

Comparing these we see that 5xy will always have the least value among the given three expressions
